He will be remembered as a fierce forensic pathologist, discipline specific, honest and loyal to our profession, with the utmost integrity, an enthusiastic teacher and a consummate professional. One of the best, funniest and most memorable lecturers Stellenbosch med students have been fortunate enough to encounter. A charismatic, witty teacher who made Forensic Sciences so much more accessible and enjoyable. He was also one of the most experienced and well-respected Forensic Pathologists, performing autopsies and testifying in court for many high profile cases in the pursuit of justice for his patients and South Africa’s innocent.

Kemp was a true renaissance man — brilliant mind, sportsman of note, genuinely humble and kind and he knew how to have fun too. He will be remembered for his air of being an absent-minded professor and his gentleness. There was very little in his manner that is belligerent or malevolent so he tended to win over even those he cross-examed and the judges before whom he appeared.

He was a people’s person and would answer people’s calls for help at any part of the day or night. Sam was a hero. His passion to eradicate the scourge of drugs and help addicts recover was his striking characteristic. Religion was never a barrier for Sam. He was resolute and he was hated by drug dealers with a passion. Many tried to silence him.

He fought for LGBT, animal and human rights, and believed that leaders should serve those they are tasked with protecting. He loved to play poker. Dave was always ready to offer leadership, guidance, wisdom, care and compassion to all who needed it. He was a keen sportsman, a musician, carpenter, metal smith and a lover of food. “Dave dedicated his life to kindness, helping others without question and without judgment. He put the well-being of Merchistonians – learners and teachers alike – above his own needs, sacrificing so much for the happiness of those he cared about.
