REMEMBERING SOUTH AFRICANS LOST TO COVID-19

David’s life was like that of a great tree whose shade gave refuge to many, spanning across Africa from Uganda to South Africa. He was a skilled paediatrician but more than that, he was able to connect to his patients more deeply than most doctors. Some childhood patients even came to see him as adults, their trust in him remaining supreme. His patients received a perfect mix of medical skill and social narrative that helped them heal. His office staff were like family, and there is an emptiness now beyond those quiet walls.

Cllr Nonhle Mkhulisi

She was a “rare breed” of public representative who helped shape the sphere of local government in our country. In her, local government in our province has lost a formidable leader who understood our communities and sought to serve them with integrity until her final days. Councillor Mkhulisi was one of the most exemplary leaders who was unflinching in tackling the challenges of development, especially for our rural communities. A former MP and of the provincial legislature, she was one of the most honest, hardworking and committed servants of the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

Mrs Veronica Francis

She has been described as having a smile that would light up a room and put everyone at ease. She will be remembered for her tireless dedication to her work, her optimism and kindness, and the endless support she provided to her colleagues, friends and family. She was the cornerstone of research collaborations with many institutions in South Africa and around the world, and will be missed by all who had the privilege of working with her.
