We live in exceptionally trying times. Just when we think we’ve turned a corner, someone else we know ends up infected by the coronavirus.

Sometimes it seems there’s no end to the unpleasant surprises in store nowadays.

Are you constantly living in a state of hopelessness and despair? First and foremost you need to know that you are not alone and that it’s okay to feel not okay. Here are some top tips for managing anxiety that will help you find your way through the worry and start to envision better days to come.

  1. Focus on the Things You Can Control

Feelings of powerlessness are totally normal during times like this. We can’t make the virus stop, we can’t predict how long it will take for normality to return, and we can’t protect our friends from harm.

When you feel these thoughts of doom creeping up, rather focus intently on what you can control, things like:

  • Following safety recommendations to the letter
  • Staying at home as much as you can
  • Practicing self-care to safeguard your health

Knowing that you’re doing everything you can do will give you some sense of comfort.

  1. Practice Mindfulness

Yoga and meditation can help to keep you grounded in the present. Focussing on the here and now helps to stop your mind racing ahead with worries.

A useful exercise is to sit quietly in a place where you won’t be disturbed and turn your thoughts inward. Quiet your mind and concentrate on your breathing and your heartbeat.

This exercise helps to distract your mind from worrying thoughts and you can recreate these feelings of centredness whenever you feel the panic setting in.

  1. Steer Clear of Bad News

It’s important to stay informed about current events, but too much news and social media can be a bad thing. Let’s face it, bad news sells, so the media do tend to focus on doom and gloom most of the time.

Rather restrict your use of social media and news sites on the internet. Read a book, take a walk, or watch a movie in your spare time.

It’s not easy to avoid anxiety when things aren’t going as smoothly as you’d like them to. Remember, you’re only causing yourself distress by worrying about things that are out of your control.

Make a conscious effort to control your anxiety and rather focus your energy on keeping yourself healthy and safe.
