He will be remembered as divinely-gifted with encyclopedic knowledge; possessed a near photographic memory; an insatiable bibliophile within the Islamic sciences and without; a teacher that never ceased to inspire; endowed with an elegant calligraphic hand and a penchant for poetry; thoroughly unassuming, pleasant, brilliant and tender-hearted.

Professor Michael Cross

He amassed an impressive publication record and he coordinated first-rate postgraduate programs throughout his academic career. Professor Cross’s passion was in mentoring young researchers and he received the first award from the Association for the Development of Education in Africa in 2012 as the most Outstanding Mentor of Educational Researchers in Africa. He was not only an astute scholar-practitioner, but someone who also personified an intellectual humility and openness so crucial to the national university transformation and development project. He was a good human being, generous in spirit, kind-hearted in relationships, and enabling in collaborations.
